North Korea launches ICBM into Sea of Japan: US

Pentagon says test not threat to North America, stresses 'ironclad' commitment to allies' security

By Michael Hernandez

WASHINGTON (AA) - North Korea carried out a second test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Pentagon said Friday.

"The U.S. Department of Defense detected and tracked a single North Korea missile launch today at about 10:41 a.m. EDT [1441GMT]," spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said in a statement. "We assess that this missile was an intercontinental ballistic missile, as had been expected."

Davis said the missile was launched from Mupyong-ni and traveled 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) before falling into the Sea of Japan.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command determined the missile was not a threat to North America, Davis said, stressing the U.S.’s commitment to regional allies South Korea and Japan is "ironclad".

"We remain prepared to defend ourselves and our allies from any attack or provocation," he said.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Joseph Dunford and Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command Harry Harris discussed "military response options" with South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Lee Sun-jin following the launch, the Pentagon said.

Tokyo and Seoul are each expected to hold late-night security meetings, according to local reports.

The test Friday is the latest step in the North's quest to develop a missile program capable of striking the U.S.

Pyongyang carried out its first milestone ICBM test July 4, which Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un called a "gift" as the U.S. celebrated Independence Day.
