North, South Korean leaders exchange farewell letters

Kim thanks Moon for efforts for peace in Korean peninsula

ANKARA (AA) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has praised South Korea's outgoing President Moon Jae-in for his efforts on peace in the region.

Kim sent a letter to Moon on Thursday in response to his farewell letter and said relations between the two neighbors could improve, Yonhap News Agency reported citing the South Korean presidency.

"Though much is left desired, my belief remains unchanged that if the South and the North pour sincerity in based on efforts made so far, inter-Korean relations can move forward as much as one wants," Kim said in the letter.

Moon is going to complete his five-year term next month and the new president-elect, Yoon Suk-yeol is likely to take office on May 10.

In his farewell letter, Moon called on the North Korean leader to resume talks with the US and make efforts for dialogue with the new South Korean president.

The exchange of letters between the two Korean leaders came amid growing tensions that the North could move for another nuclear test after numerous missile drills, including an intercontinental ballistic missile this year.

During his tenure, Moon held three summit meetings with Kim and played a key role in two meetings between Kim and former US President Donald Trump.
