OIC urges India, Pakistan to exercise restraint
Tension rose between India and Pakistan after Indian jets intruded into Pakistan's airspace early Tuesday
ISTANBUL (AA) - The world’s premier Islamic bloc on Wednesday condemned India’s violation of the “line of control” with Pakistan, calling on the two neighbors to exercise restraint.
In a statement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)’s General Secretariat denounced “this action against an OIC founding member state”.
It also "urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid any steps that would endanger peace and security in the region."
The Jeddah-based grouping also called on both parties to "act responsibly..., and to seek peaceful solution to current crisis without resort to use of force".
The OIC call came amid reports that Pakistan and India claimed they had shot down each other’s fighter jets.
Tension between the two nuclear neighbors rose after Indian jets intruded into Pakistan's airspace early Tuesday.
India claimed its jets had killed “several terrorists” in “preemptive action” on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) camp, a group that Islamabad listed as a terrorist organization in 2002.
Pakistani officials have rejected the claim.
