ISTANBUL (AA) - Some 4.4 tons of hashish was seized in the Gulf of Cadiz northwest of Spain in a joint operation, an official statement said on Monday.
The operation was carried out by the Spanish National Police and Spanish Customs with the support of the UK's National Crime Agency, the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre Narcotics (MAOC-N) – a joint initiative by six EU member states and the UK – said in a statement.
The sea vessel Ivy Rosa went to Morocco's west coast to load the drugs, according to Spanish authorities. The drugs were meant to be transported to South America.
However, the ship returned to the gulf – which is adjacent to both Spain and Portugal – to seek shelter due to bad weather, and that is where the interception took place, authorities said.
The MAOC-N is an initiative by six EU member states – France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Portugal – plus the UK, and is co-funded by the Internal Security Fund of the EU.
