Pakistan condemns attack on Saudi hospital in Sudan

Over 70 people killed in Saturday's drone strike in El Fasher, capital of Sudan's North Darfur state

KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - Pakistan on Monday condemned an attack on a Saudi hospital in Sudan, terming it a violation of international law.

"The attack leading to unfortunate deaths clearly violates international law and puts innocent civilians at grave risk. Pakistan extends its deepest sympathies to the victims and their families," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

More than 70 people were killed in Saturday's drone strike, blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on the Saudi Teaching Maternity Hospital in El Fasher, the capital of the North Darfur state.

This attack, the statement said, underscores the urgent need for upholding the sanctity of healthcare facilities and adherence to the principles of international humanitarian law.

Pakistan believes that the conflict can only be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

"We express our full support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan," the statement concluded.

In Sudan, the war between the RSF and the Sudanese army has continued since April 2023. Both have accused each other of war crimes, including targeting civilians and indiscriminately shelling residential areas, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people.
