ISLAMABAD (AA) - Pakistan said on Friday that it has been elected to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six organs of the world body responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization.

This is the 11th time that Pakistan has been elected to the UN group.

The election was held on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York and Islamabad will take its seat at ECOSOC on Jan. 1, 2024, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Pakistan has served on the 54-member council 10 times in the past, serving as its president on six different occasions – 1952, 1957, 1975, 1995, 2005, and 2020.

"At ECOSOC, Pakistan has been a leading voice and consensus-builder on promoting international economic cooperation and sustainable development.

"During its new term, Pakistan will continue to champion the cause of strengthening the development pillar of the UN system, and work closely with the Member States to leverage the Council’s mandate more effectively," read the statement.

Islamabad will also work for strengthening the council’s voice and its role in realizing the 2030 agenda, it added.

ECOSOC has 54 members and 18 members are elected by the General Assembly each year for a three-year term.
