Pakistan: Jailed ex-premier to be reshifted to hospital

Three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif is suffering from several cardiac related diseases

By Aamir Latif

KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - The government Thursday announced it was going to reshift the jailed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to hospital upon medical board suggestion.

According to a notification from the state government of Punjab province, the government has decided to reshift the three-time premier to the hospital on

“humanitarian ground” for immediate cardiac-related treatment.

The board recommended shifting Sharif to a hospital as he suffers from diabetes, heart and chronic kidney disease.

Sharif, who is currently serving a seven-year jail term in a jail in the northeastern Lahore city after being convicted by a trial court in a corruption case, is likely to be shifted to Jinnah Hospital on Friday, local broadcaster Geo News reported quoting a senior jail official.

He was shifted back to jail from a hospital earlier this month after being treated at a hospital in Lahore amid complaints from his family that accused the government of denying required treatment to the former premier.

The government, for its part, denied the charge.

His party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), expressed concern over the party supremo's health condition and alleged the government is hiding medical reports.

Sharif served as prime minister from 1990 to 1992, 1997 to 1999, and 2013 to 2017, unable to complete even a single five-year term.
