Pakistan recommends US President Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

Islamabad says Trump's intervention defused recent Pakistan-India tension that could have had catastrophic consequences for millions

By Islamuddin Sajid

ISLAMABAD (AA) - Pakistan has announced that it recommended US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of what it described as his “decisive” diplomatic intervention during the recent Pakistan-India crisis, according to an official statement issued on Saturday.

Islamabad stated that Trump’s intervention helped defuse tensions and avert a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, which could have had catastrophic consequences for millions across the region and beyond.

"At a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation," it said in the statement, adding: "This intervention stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker and his commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue."

At the height of hostilities between India and Pakistan last month, triggered by the April 22 attack in the Indian-administered Kashmir, Trump announced on May 10 that the US mediated a ceasefire, saying he prevented a potential nuclear war by using trade and direct diplomacy between the two South Asian nuclear-armed nations.

The latest development came after Trump met with Pakistani military chief Gen. Asim Munir at the White House on Wednesday.

Pakistan further said it "acknowledges and greatly admires President Trump’s sincere offers to help resolve the longstanding dispute of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan."

“Durable peace in South Asia will remain elusive until the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions concerning Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement stressed.

However, during a phone conversation with Trump on Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that India would not accept third-party mediation in its dealings with Pakistan.
