Pakistani former premier announces launch of ‘Fill the Prison Movement’

‘All workers and Pakistani nation should prepare for Jail Bharo Tehreek,’ Khan says in televised address

By Islamuddin Sajid

ISLAMABAD (AA) - Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced Saturday the launch of “Jail Bharo Tehreek,” or Fill the Prison Movement, amid ongoing political tension in the South Asian country.

Khan asked workers from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to prepare to go to jail as the government wants to arrest party leaders.

"All workers and Pakistani nation should prepare for Jail Bharo Tehreek as they (government) tortured us and we couldn't remain silent anymore," Khan said in a televised address,

Khan's announcement came after the recent arrests of party leader and former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and former Interior Minister and ally of Khan, Sheikh Rashid Khan.

The government also registered cases against several local leaders and former PTI lawmakers.

A court in Islamabad granted bail Wednesday to Chaudhry and released him, however, Rashid has been sent to jail.

Khan, who is chairman of the PTI, criticized the government for delay tactics to avoid elections in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where provincial assemblies were dissolved by Khan last month in an attempt to hold new elections.

"Under the Constitution, it's the responsibility of the election commission to hold elections within 90 days," said Khan.

He warned that if the government failed to hold elections in the two provinces within 90 days, it will be an act of abrogation of the Constitution and responsible people would face punishment for high treason.

The former prime minister, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote last April, has been calling for early elections, currently scheduled for late this year.

The coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected the demand and said elections will take place as scheduled.
