NEW DELHI (AA) – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed condolences to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, whose mother passed away on Friday morning.

"There is no greater loss than losing one’s mother," Sharif tweeted. "My condolences to Prime Minister @narendramodi on the passing away of his mother."

Modi's mother Heeraba, 99, had been admitted to the U. N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad, in Gujarat, the home state of Premier Modi.

Modi on Friday morning traveled to Gujarat, where he lit his mother's funeral pyre in Gandhinagar.

Referring to his late mother’s age, the prime minister on Friday morning tweeted: "A glorious century rests at the feet of God."

Political leaders and people from all walks of life expressed condolences to the premier over his mother's passing.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed his condolences, and Mallikarjun Kharge, head of the main opposition Indian National Congress party, said he was "deeply saddened" to hear of the passing of Heeraben Modi.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family in this hour of grief," he wrote on Twitter.

This June, as Modi's mother entered her 100th year, Modi wrote that "my mother is as simple as she is extraordinary.”

"Today, I feel extremely happy and fortunate to share that my mother Smt. Heeraba is entering her hundredth year. This is going to be her birth centenary year," he said.

During important festivals and occasions, Modi was often seen visiting his mother to seek her blessings.
