Democrats eyeing best opportunity to win Senate seat in state

By Servet Gunerigok

WASHINGTON (AA) - The state of Pennsylvania was the site for rallies from current and former presidents Saturday as the US is set for midterm elections next week.

Democratic President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama rallied for Senate candidate John Fetterman and gubernatorial nominee Josh Shapiro.

Donald Trump, a Republican, came out to support celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz who is vying for the state’s Senate seat against Fetterman.

Republican state senator Doug Mastriano is running against Shapiro.

"If we elect John Fetterman to the Senate and keep control of the House, we can restore the right to choose in this country by codifying Roe v. Wade and make it the law of the land. With Josh Shapiro as governor, they’ll be no ban in Pennsylvania," Biden said in his Philadelphia address.

Trump held his rally at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport just outside of Pittsburgh and asked voters to back Republican candidates on Tuesday.

"People of Pennsylvania are going to elect Dr. Mehmet Oz to the United States Senate and you're going to send the great Doug Mastriano, a great man, to the governor's mansion. You're going to elect the incredible slate of true America first Republicans up and down the ballot," he said.

Democrats are eyeing their best opportunity to gain a Senate seat by flipping Pennsylvania, replacing retiring Republican Pat Toomey.

A fierce battle is taking place between Fetterman and Oz.

Despite popular social media spots deriding Oz as an out-of-touch candidate lacking connections to Pennsylvania, Fetterman's lead waned after he suffered a stroke in May and the visible effects of his health condition became a target for Oz.

Obama said Fetterman's stroke did not change "who he is, it didn’t change what he cares about, it didn’t change his values, his heart, his fight," adding that the Democrat candidate will only "represent you."

"It doesn’t change who he will represent when he gets to the United States Senate," said Biden’s former boss.
