People queue for foodstuff, groceries after weekend-long curfew in Kyiv

Humanitarian situation downhills in Ukraine's capital as many shops, pharmacies close its doors, people queue for groceries

KYIV, Ukraine (AA) - People in Ukraine's capital Kyiv have been queuing in a long line following the weekend-long curfew to buy the foodstuff and groceries amid the ongoing war in the country.

The capital has been under a full weekend curfew since Friday at 5 p.m. local time, which ended at 8 a.m. on Monday. The curfew will continue every day "for more effective defense of the capital and security of its people," Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said on Twitter last week.
Raisa Vurina, 83, who went out alone from the shop holding a walking stick in her hands, said that she just managed to buy some bread, eggs, and "nothing else."

"I just could buy a little. I waited for three hours in the queue," she said.

Sergii, a 30-year-old resident of Kyiv, said that he has been waiting in the queue for about 30 minutes, adding that closed shops are not the only problem they are facing nowadays.

"Most of all, the pharmacies are closed. The pharmacy is very much needed more than anything else. I called the mayor's office and the mayor's office said that they didn't know anything and that all the pharmacies are closed. They promised that they would open. We can't buy any medicines, can't buy anything at all," he lamented.

"We want to buy at least some flour as there is no bread at all. It's the fourth day. No bread, nothing. The last time we only bought gingerbread," he added.

A woman standing in line said she decided to wait in the queue as "it seems like a little silent" as siren sounds alerting the upcoming bombardment are mostly being heard in the evening.

"We want to buy something to stock up some supplies because we do not know what will happen next due to the military situation. People took advantage while it was possible to go outside. Now they (shop staff) say it's impossible to have bread at all. We do not know what we can find in the shop... we will look at the situation (inside)," she said.

Meanwhile, Vasiliy, another person in the line of over 300 people, said he has chosen the store as it has its own bakery inside.

"Maybe there is a chance... there could be some bread," he said.
