Poland’s president, prime minister agree to cooperate on 'fundamental issues'

ISTANBUL (AA) - Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk agreed to cooperate on “fundamental issues” following their first formal meeting Thursday, despite a bitter rivalry between their political camps, government sources confirmed to broadcaster TVP World.

"The prime minister and the president agreed that on fundamental issues, there must be cooperation in accordance with the constitution,” said government spokesman Adam Szlapka.

Szlapka noted that the meeting addressed issues such as security and diplomacy along with matters related to Ukraine.

"In one thing, the President and I were in complete agreement: that we have beloved families and fantastic children!" Tusk wrote on the US social media company X’s platform after the meeting.

Nawrocki's election is seen as a setback for Tusk’s broad coalition, spanning from the left to the center right.

Backed by the right-wing opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, Nawrocki is expected to use his veto powers to block the government's plans to ease abortion access and undo legal changes introduced by PiS between 2015 and 2023.
