Polish, Greek teams rescue 3 survivors from rubble in quake-hit southern Türkiye

2 rescued in Adiyaman province, 1 in Hatay province

WARSAW/ATHENS (AA) - Polish and Greek search teams rescued three people Tuesday who were trapped under the rubble in two quake-hit provinces in southern Türkiye.

Andrzej Bartkowiak, chief of Poland's Fire Service, said his teams continue efforts in the Besni district of southeastern Adiyaman province.

"The first person was rescued. A man extracted from the rubble together with the Turkish team. We pulled a man out from under the rubble. It's a pride," he wrote on Twitter.

On Monday, Poland sent 76 firefighters and eight search and rescue dogs to support Türkiye.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced Tuesday that Polish miners would also join search and rescue efforts.

And a Greece disaster response unit, EMAK, rescued a 50-year-old father and his 6-year-old daughter from the rubble in the Iskenderun district of Hatay, province according to Greek public broadcaster ERT.

Early Monday, a 7.7-magnitude tremor struck southern Türkiye’s Kahramanmaras province. Nine hours later, a 7.6-magnitude tremor also rocked the region, affecting several provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.

The earthquake was also felt in several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon.

At least 4,544 people have been killed and 26,721 injured in 10 provinces.
