Peruvian capital rocked by protests against political class and crime, leaving over 100 people injured

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - At least one protester was reportedly killed by a gunshot during demonstrations overnight by thousands of people in Peru’s capital Lima against the government and Congress.
The Ombudsman's Office confirmed the death Thursday and reported over 100 injuries, including 78 police officers and 24 protesters, adding that several arrests were made.
The disturbances began Wednesday night, when thousands of protesters—including those from the Generacion Z collective, artistic groups and transport workers—marched toward Congress. The demonstrators were protesting against the current political class and the sharp rise in extortion and murder committed by organized crime.
When they arrived at Congress, protesters tried to breach the security barriers protecting the legislature. Police responded with tear gas, shields and batons, while some demonstrators retaliated by throwing stones and other objects.
During the early morning hours, the death of Eduardo Ruiz was confirmed. The Public Prosecutor's Office announced that it has initiated urgent steps to clarify the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
Videos and images shared by protesters on social media show a traffic police officer firing a gun at people after he fell off his motorcycle on a central avenue in the capital. Eyewitnesses in the protest zone reported finding several spent bullet casings on the ground.
Social and political discontent continues to escalate in Peru. Neither former President Dina Boluarte's removal from power, nor the subsequent election of interim President Jose Jeri has managed to calm the country. Adding to the tensions is the appointment of the new Ministerial Cabinet, led by Ernesto Alvarez, who previously sparked controversy for criticizing the "virulence" of the Generation Z protesters and likening them to terrorists on social media.
Jeri expressed his regret over Ruiz's death, stating his wish that "the investigations objectively determine the facts and responsibilities."
He concluded by offering condolences, saying: "Strength to his family at this time."
