MOSCOW (AA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday expressed condolences to Pakistan where terrorists hijacked a passenger train earlier this week.

In a telegram addressed to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Putin strongly condemned the attack, calling it "cruel and cynical."

"We commend the courage and high professionalism of the Pakistani military and law enforcement officers, their decisive actions saved hundreds of lives," he said.

Putin said Russia is ready to further strengthen cooperation with its Pakistani partners in the fight against all forms of terrorism.

"I ask you to convey my deepest sympathy and support to the families of the victims, as well as my wishes for a swift recovery to all those affected by the attack," he added.

The attack in the southwestern Balochistan province by separatists claimed the lives of at least 21 passengers and four troops, while all 33 terrorists involved were killed, according to Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, head of the Pakistan Army's information wing.

He said all the hostages were recovered after the rescue operation.
