Putin open to talks with Merz if Berlin is ready, says Kremlin

ISTANBUL (AA) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to holding talks with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz if Berlin expresses readiness, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Saturday, following Merz’s indication that he may speak with the Russian leader by phone.

“Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that he is ready for contacts with any leaders,” Peskov told reporters, emphasizing that dialogue depends on mutual willingness.

“He (Putin) is open to interaction, to dialogue with any leaders to the extent that the leaders themselves are ready,” the Kremlin spokesperson said.

Peskov said that the Kremlin observes “many contradictory statements from Europe,” adding: “They are generally more confrontational in nature than aimed at trying to somehow revive our relations.”

The remarks came after Merz said he does not exclude a possible telephone conversation with Putin amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between Russia and Western nations.

Putin and Merz have not had direct contact since the latter became chancellor following Germany’s 2025 elections.
