KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) - The Qatari and Afghan prime ministers met Friday in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation on various fields.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Taliban-appointed Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund, both accompanied by delegations, underlined their determination to further strengthen relations and the importance of cooperation on education and health.

Akhund expressed his satisfaction for Qatar's goodwill and cooperation with Afghanistan, said Mujahid.

Kandahar province in the south of Afghanistan gained political importance after the Taliban return to power in August 2021.

The inhabitants of Kandahar are predominantly Pashtuns, who form the backbone of the Taliban. Many senior Taliban officials are also from Kandahar and currently have residences in the province.

Qatar hosted peace talks between the Taliban and the previous government of the country, playing an important role in the process leading to the Doha Agreement signed between the Taliban and the US on Feb. 29, 2020.
