Quake victims in Türkiye, Syria continue to receive assistance: Danish NGO

Death toll from last month’s twin earthquakes in southern Türkiye rises to more than 46,104

LONDON (AA) - People in Türkiye and Syria continue to receive emergency assistance and psychosocial support following last month’s "horrific earthquakes," the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) said Monday.

In a statement, the non-profit organization said thousands of people in the two countries are still in need of humanitarian aid a month after the twin earthquakes shook communities across the region.

"Both adults and children are clearly very affected by having gone through an unimaginable, traumatizing experience,” Charlotte Slente, secretary general of the DRC, said after visiting Antakya district in Hatay province.

The DRC noted that it has been responding in both Türkiye and Syria with emergency assistance and psychosocial support to help heal the wounds from the earthquakes.

"Our response seeks to support host communities, refugees and internally displaced families that have been affected, but the needs are significant," it added.

More than 46,100 people have been killed in the two quakes that shook Türkiye on Feb. 6, according to officials.

The strong tremors, which were centered in Kahramanmaras province, have affected around 13.5 million people across 10 other provinces: Hatay, Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Malatya, Adana, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa and Elazig.

In neighboring Syria, over 5,900 people have been killed in the earthquakes.
