Radiation 'primarily drives' glacier melting in China: Study

Muz Taw Glacier in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region lost mass of 18.55 meters (60.8 feet) over last 24 years

ISTANBUL (AA) – A recent study showed that net radiation "primarily drives" glacier melting in China, Xinhua News reported Wednesday.

The study, which was published in the international journal Advances in Climate Change Research, reconstructed glacier melt from 2000 to 2023 in the Muz Taw Glacier of the Sawur Mountains in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

According to the study, the glacier has lost 18.55 meters (60.8 feet) of water-equivalent mass in the last 24 years.

Researchers discovered that “net radiation accounted for 63%” as the leading contributor of the mass loss in the glacier.

The study also offered a foundation for estimating regional glacier water resources.
