ISTANBUL (AA) - Obihiro City, the northernmost Japanese island, has been experiencing heavy snowfall for more than 12 hours since Monday, setting a record for the country with totals nearing 130 centimeters, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

The storm occurred due to a low pressure system and moist air resulting in snowfall of 129 centimeters (50 inches), it said.

All flights at the Obihiro Airport, where the entire runway was blanketed in snow, were canceled, and a small vessel was buried under the snow, according to the NHK broadcaster.

Police reportedly received about 20 reports about cars being stuck due to snow.

The Kushiro-Nemuro region in the eastern part of Hokkaido also experienced record snow.

Authorities said while it is the peak snowfall for those areas, other areas such as the Sea of Japan coast from the northern to the western side are expected to experience more snow.

The Hokuriku and Niigata Provinces are expected to receive 100 centimeters (39 inches) of snow in the coming hours, according to forecasts.

Citizens were asked to take precautions including putting on winter tires and carrying winter equipment.

The weather agency also urged people to stay vigilant for strong winds, rough seas, avalanches and potential transportation disruptions.
