ISTANBUL (AA) – A recovery operation for a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last year has begun, according to local media.
Around 70 technicians and experts mobilized on the island of Sicily to work on the recovery of the yacht, named the Bayesian, public broadcaster Rai News reported over the weekend.
The work led by Dutch companies with the support of Italian specialists is expected to last around 20 to 25 days.
The Hebo Lift 10, one of Europe's most powerful maritime cranes, will be used to recover the wreck while Hebo Lift 2, a multipurpose barge, will carry out the preparatory work on site through an underwater inspection of the wreck and surrounding area using a remotely operated submarine.
The 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged superyacht capsized last Aug. 19 due to heavy rains and stormy weather about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) east of Palermo, southern Italy.
Seven people died in the incident, including British billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter along with Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef.
