Relentless snowfall disrupts life across Greece

Along with biting cold, people face problems in transport, power supply in country

By Magda Panoutsopoulou

ATHENS (AA) – Heavy snowfall continued to cause problems in Greece on Tuesday as a cold front sweeps through the country, including the capital Athens, since the weekend.

The snowfall, the heaviest Greece has seen in years, disrupted most public transportation in the country, including the metro in the capital and northern parts of the Attica region.

Commuters have been facing problems as streets in most parts of Athens, particularly the north, remain covered with snow.

The railways operator has also reported several interruptions, including accidents from fallen trees and derailments.

Electricity supply has been disrupted, with major power cuts in most northern Athens suburbs and parts of Evia.

According to the Athens National Observatory’s weather service, the snowfall will continue until Wednesday.

Temperatures ranged from minus 12 C (10.4 F) to 7 C (44.6 F) in northern parts of Greece and minus 18 C (minus 0.4 F) to 1 C (33.8 F) in western Macedonia.

Greece has halted all COVID-19 vaccinations due to the weather conditions.

Citizens who had their appointments canceled will be informed of new dates and times, health officials announced.
