WARSAW (AA) - The remains of “an unidentified military object” have been found in the village of Zamosc, northern Poland, the Defense Ministry said Thursday.

Polish commercial radio station RMF FM reported that the object is an air-to-ground missile, with inscriptions in Russian on the shell.

Poland’s security services are on high alert due to the war in Ukraine. After a stray missile landed in eastern Poland last year, there were widespread fears of Polish and NATO reprisals.

“The situation does not threaten residents’ safety. The site is being investigated by Polish officers, military police, and sappers,” the Defense Ministry said.

Poland’s General Prosecutor and Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said: “The Military Division of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdansk, under the supervision of the National Prosecutor’s Office, has initiated proceedings in the case of the remains of an airborne military object found in a forest a dozen kilometers from Bydgoszcz.”

RMF FM reported that the shell is missing its warhead and may have become separated from it on impact.

Polish authorities are reportedly searching for the warhead.

RMF FM reported that the object was found the day before yesterday, but it fell in the forest some time ago. "At first it was thought that it was a drone. Then inscriptions in Russian were found on it," the radio station reported.

Zamosc is 265 kilometers (164 miles) northwest of the capital, Warsaw.
