LONDON (AA) - A search and rescue operation is underway in the English Channel after a major incident involving a small boat, the British Coast Guard said Wednesday.

People are feared dead, according to local reports.

HM Coast Guard helicopters alongside one from the French Navy are also part of the operation.

"We are aware of an incident in UK waters and all relevant agencies are supporting a coordinated response,” a government spokesperson was quoted as saying by local media.

The incident comes amid reports of rising numbers of small boat arrivals from France via the English Channel.
