Rival Sudanese militaries ignore Egypt's summit call for peace as fighting resumes in Khartoum

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Heavy clashes between the Sudanese army and its rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) resumed in and around Khartoum on Friday as the rival sides ignored Egypt's summit call for a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis.

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu that after hours of relative calm in Khartoum, clashes resumed in southern Khartoum, with explosions heard and flames seen in several areas.

Heavy military aircraft were seen in Omdurman, west of Khartoum, and Bahri, north of the capital, along with heavy deployment of Sudanese army units.

The two rival teams have yet to comment on these fresh clashes.

The clashes restarted a day after Sudan’s neighboring countries concluded a summit in Egypt, which urged both sides to stop armed fighting and engage in a comprehensive dialogue to find a solution to end the ongoing crisis.

On the directive of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who seeks to stop the three-month-old armed fight from getting worse and spreading to other regions, leaders from Sudan's seven most important neighbors met on Thursday in the capital Cairo and appealed to both sides to talk and find a solution to the crisis.

Since April, clashes between the army and the RSF have ravaged Sudan, killing nearly 3,000 civilians and injuring thousands, according to local medics.

Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi and US mediators between the warring rivals had failed to end the violence in the country.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that nearly three million people have been displaced by the current conflict in Sudan.
