Mats Hummels, the veteran defender for Italian club AS Roma and the German national team, announced Friday that he will say goodbye to football at the end of the season.
"I am struggling with my emotions right now. Now comes a moment that no footballer can avoid. After more than 18 years and after so much that football has given me, I'm ending my career this summer," the 36-year-old, whose contract with Roma expires at the end of the season, wrote on X.
Hummels, a product of Bayern Munich's academy, moved to rival Borussia Dortmund, where he impressed with his performances.
The veteran, who won six German championships, including two with Dortmund, played in the Champions League final twice with Dortmund in the 2012-13 and 2023-24 seasons, but failed to win the trophy.
Hummels has 78 caps for the national team and was part of the team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2014.
