Russia bans import of livestock products from EU due to disease outbreak

ISTANBUL (AA) - Russia banned livestock product imports from the EU countries due to foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) announced on Friday.

In a statement, Rosselkhoznadzor said that the measures taken by the European Commission against the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak on the continent were insufficient, adding that the import ban will be effective as of Jan. 20.

Farms, zoos and animal parks in Berlin were closed on Jan. 12 after foot-and-mouth disease was detected in a herd of buffaloes in the German state of Brandenburg.

South Korea and the Netherlands also banned some livestock imports from Germany after the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
