Russia prioritizing production of high-precision weapons and support for nukes

MOSCOW (AA) – High-precision weapons, aircraft, and support for the strategic nuclear forces will be priority of Russia's state defense this year, Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said on Saturday.

Speaking at a meeting with the Finance Ministry, Shoygu said despite Western sanctions, 85% of contracts for the production of the state defense have been already concluded.

"Taking into account the conduct of a special military operation,” he began, referring to the month-old war on Ukraine, “this year it is necessary to maintain the pace of delivery of advanced weapons to the troops, including robotic complexes, information support and electronic warfare, as well as, of course, as it has always been, logistical support.”

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began on Feb. 24, has met international outrage, with the EU, US and UK, among others, implementing tough financial sanctions on Moscow.

At least 1,081 civilians have been killed in Ukraine and 1,707 injured, according to UN estimates, while cautioning that the true figure is likely far higher.

More than 3.7 million Ukrainians have also fled to neighboring countries, with millions more displaced inside the country, according to the UN refugee agency.
