Russia starts production of 5th generation fighter jets

Contract for 76 Su-57 stealth fighter jets was signed between aircraft manufacturer, Russian Defense Ministry in June

MOSCOW (AA) - Russia has started the mass production of the Su-57 fighter jets, the office of the country’s vice prime minister said on Wednesday.

The contract for 76 Su-57 -- stealth fighter jets of fifth generation for the Russian Airspace Forces -- was signed in June between aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi and the Russian Defense Ministry.

The contract is scheduled to be implemented by the end of 2019.

In a separate statement, Russian Federal Service of Military-Technical Cooperation confirmed that Moscow will supply India with over 1,000 air-to-air missiles.

The contract was signed "some time ago", the service said in a statement.

The missiles are aimed for Su-30MKI fighters being operated by the Indian Air Forces, it said.

Last week, Indian Air Chief Marshal Birender Sing Dhanoa also said that the country's Defense Ministry asked Russia to modernize its fleet of Su-30MKI -- supermaneuverable and multirole fighter jets.
