Russian actions in Ukraine 'brutal aggression,' says Prince Charles
Values of democracy under attack, Prince of Wales says as Moscow increases its attacks on Kyiv
By Muhammad Mussa
LONDON (AA) - Prince Charles on Tuesday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of undermining the foundations of democracy in Russia's war on Ukraine.
In an address delivered in the south of England, the Prince of Wales offered his support and solidarity to the beleaguered people of Ukraine and described Putin’s actions in the country as "one of brute force and aggression."
Charles has been commemorating the service of slain MP Sir David Amess, who was murdered in his constituency of Southend last year. The Prince of Wales described Amess’s death as a “terrible tragedy” and an “attack on democracy, on an open society, on freedom itself.”
"We are seeing those same values under attack today in Ukraine in the most unconscionable way. In the stand we take here, we are in solidarity with all those who are resisting brutal aggression,” Charles added.
The heir to the throne became the first member of the Royal Family to openly condemn and criticize Russia's war on Ukraine.
The institution of the monarchy is duty-bound to remain politically impartial and stand clear of political statements and criticisms of actions undertaken by nation states.
Russia’s war on Ukraine, which began last Thursday, has been met by an outcry from the international community with the EU, UK, and US implementing a range of economic sanctions against the Kremlin.
Entering its sixth day, Russian forces have continued their attacks on multiple cities across Ukraine.
