Russian government commits $1.5M for food assistance in Mozambique’s conflict-hit northern provinces

LILONGWE, Malawi (AA) - The Russian government has provided $1.5 millions through the World Food Program (WFP) on Friday for food assistance for families affected by terror attacks in Mozambique’s conflict-hit Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces.

Claire Conan, WFP resident representative in Mozambique, when receiving the donation in the national capital of Maputo, said the assistance will strengthen the food supply for almost 200,000 residents facing food insecurity and malnutrition, especially women and children.

“This support comes at a time when families in northern Mozambique are facing some of the most difficult days. Regular food assistance, therefore, helps them rebuild their lives, builds a path to stability and gives hope,” said Conan.

She said the aid comes at a time, “when the armed conflict in the region continues to uproot families, disrupt likelihoods and push communities to the brink. With more than 340,000 recently displaced between January to November this year, WFP assistance is under pressure and needs continue to increase.”

Vladimir Tararov, Russian ambassador to Mozambique, said, “It’s no secret that the population in northern Mozambique was unfortunately facing severe food shortages due to constant terrorist attacks that were shaking the region and undermining its development.”

“Our aid cannot solve all the problems faced by the inhabitants of Cabo Delgado province, but I hope it and contribute to alleviating people’s suffering. It’s a small step, but in the right direction,” he said.

And in its response to the needs of 10,000 people who have recently been forced to flee their homes in the region, the Doctors Without Borders medical charity has launched an emergency intervention in Nampula Province.

Since Dec. 4, the doctors have been providing medical care and essential services in the region in areas with the highest concentration of displaced people.

Gas-rich Cabo Delgado Province has been the target of extremist attacks since 2017.
