Russia’s Lavrov refuses to address reports about moving of BRICS summit to China

Russian foreign minister says information was spread by British tabloid and he does not read English newspapers

MOSCOW (AA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov refused Thursday to comment on reports that the BRICS summit will be moved from South Africa to China so that President Vladimir Putin could attend it.

Difficulties arose for Putin after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of "forceful deportation" of Ukrainian children.

South Africa recognizes the ICC jurisdiction and therefore has to arrest Putin if he comes for the summit, planned for Aug. 22 in Johannesburg.

Asked to comment on the media reports, Lavorv said: "As I understand it, this news was published only in one of the English tabloids, and I don't read English newspapers."

To another question on the possible enlargement of BRICS, Lavrov said it is “still forming, developing," and work on resolving the issues of acquiring new members continues.

He praised BRICS as a formation that "symbolizes the evolution of the multipolar world."

"BRICS is a different structure. It is a new organization based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, consensus, non-interference and strict adherence to the UN Charter, all its principles and in all their interrelations. BRICS does not choose which principle it likes for a particular situation," he said.
