Rwanda has cut use of hydrofluorocarbons by 54%, says official

Hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, are climate-warming gases primarily used for cooling, refrigeration

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) – Rwanda has reduced the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) – dangerous greenhouse gases primarily used for cooling and refrigeration – by 54%, an official said on Friday.

Rwanda has adopted a strategy to promote energy efficient appliances and is committed to developing more climate friendly and cheaper cooling solutions, Juliet Kabera, head of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, said at an event marking the fifth anniversary of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

Signed in Rwanda’s capital Kigali on Oct. 15, 2016, the amendment added HFCs to the list of substances to be gradually phased out as part of the international protocol’s aim to preserve and restore the ozone layer.

Ratified by more than 120 countries over the past five years, the global pact aims to reduce production and consumption of HFCs by more than 80% over the next 30 years.

“Rwanda was one of the first countries in the world to ratify the Kigali Amendment in May 2017, and since then, we have reduced HFCs’ consumption by 54%,” Kabera said.

“We have established an online system for permitting the import and export of new, used, recycled, and reclaimed HFCs.”

Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, Rwanda’s environment minister, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a multilateral approach to address environmental challenges.

“Rwanda stands ready to do our part. We are committed to achieving our short-term climate action plan and our long-term vision to be carbon neutral by 2050. We look forward to working together with the international community to make these goals a reality,” she said.
