Yoon will lead the campaign of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) in the elections.

He won 47.85% of votes cast in a four-day poll by party members and the general public this week, Seoul-based Yonhap news reported.

His nearest party rival Hong Joon-pyo came close with 41.50% of total votes.

The PPP announced results during a national convention at the Kim Koo Museum and Library in Seoul.
