Security forces disperse protesters in front of Georgian parliament

Approval of draft law on “Transparency of Foreign Influence" led to demonstrations

By Davit Kachkachishvili

TBILISI, Georgia (AA) – Security forces in Georgia used tear gas and water cannons Tuesday to disperse demonstrators who had gathered in front of the parliament building to protest a law they say would limit the rights of freedom of expression and association.

Approval of the draft law on "Transparency of Foreign Influence" led to demonstrations in the capital Tbilisi.

The law requires individuals, civil society organizations and media outlets to register with the Justice Ministry as “agents of foreign influence” if they receive at least 20% of their funds from abroad. It imposes additional reporting requirements, inspections and administrative and criminal liability, including up to five years in prison for any violations.

Demonstrators reacted strongly to the approval of the bill submitted by the opposition People's Power Party. Opposition parties argue that the law in question is anti-democratic.

According to the Georgian Interior Ministry, protestors were attempting to illegally close an entrance to the parliament building.

Security forces deployed around the parliament building intervened and several people were detained.

The draft law on intelligence activities of foreign countries also caused fights among deputies during the talks on March 3 and 6.
