OVIEDO, Spain (AA) - One woman died and 39 people were injured when a bus carrying Moroccan migrant workers crashed in southern Spain on Monday.
Police are still investigating the cause of this Labor Day tragedy, but the driver reportedly lost control of the bus at a roundabout while traveling toward greenhouses in the province of Huelva.
In addition to the woman who died, three others sustained "very serious injuries," according to emergency services.
The Moroccan Consul General informed Spanish news agency EFE that the victim's family has been notified about the death, and they will work to repatriate her body. He also mentioned that Moroccan authorities have visited the various hospitals where the injured are being treated.
Those involved in the accident are among the 14,800 migrant workers contracted to work in greenhouses in Huelva, as reported by El Pais.
Huelva is a massive producer of strawberries that are exported widely, but the local industry has faced controversy over the living conditions of migrant workers as well as unsustainable water use.
Under this year's migrant worker contracts, employers are required to pay for any work-related medical costs, such as those resulting from this accident. However, workers are only allowed to take one day off per week, which explains why they were on their way to work on this holiday Monday.
