KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) – At least 14 people were killed and 36 others wounded when a gunman attacked a Shia shrine in the Afghan capital Kabul, authorities said Tuesday.

Interior Ministry Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said one of the victims of the attack was a police officer.

The attack occurred when worshippers gathered at the Karte Sakhi shrine, one of the biggest in the capital, for the traditional Shia commemorations on the Ashura holy day, when they mark the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Hussein.

Although Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi put the number of attackers at four, Sediqqi said one attacker was shot dead.

Last July, another attack in Kabul which targeted the Shia Hazara minority killed at least 80 people died and wounded 200 others. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack.
