ISTANBUL (AA) - An explosion killed two people in a suburb of the Ugandan capital of Kampala on Tuesday.
The blast occurred near the Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine, killing a man and woman on a motorcycle, as thousands gathered to celebrate Uganda Martyrs Day, eyewitnesses told the local news website Monitor.
They said the bomb went off before they got to the church.
Ugandan military spokesperson Col. Chris Magezi said on X that the army intercepted and “neutralized” two terrorists in Munyonyo.
“It was an intelligence-led operation, and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption,” he said.
Magezi urged the public to stay “calm but vigilant,” and to report any suspicious people, objects or activities to security forces.
He added one of the terrorists, a woman, was a suicide bomber carrying powerful explosives.
