Amtrak passenger train collides with freight train in South Carolina, US media report

ANKARA (AA) – Two people were killed when an Amtrak passenger train collided with a freight train in the U.S. state of South Carolina early Sunday, U.S. media reported.

At least 70 people were injured, according to Lexington County spokesman Harrison Cahill.

“Amtrak Train 91, operating between New York and Miami, came in contact with a CSX freight train at around 2:35 a.m. [0635GMT] in Cayce, South Carolina,” Amtrak said in a statement.

The statement added: “The lead engine derailed, as well as some passenger cars. There were eight crew members and approximately 139 passengers, with injuries reported.”
