20 detained during LGBTI parade in Istanbul

Police disperse marchers in LGBTI parade who defied a ban from local authorities

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkish police on Sunday detained 20 people during an unauthorized LGBTI parade in central Istanbul.

Small groups from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community gathered around Taksim Square in defiance of a ban from Istanbul governor's office.

Police broke up the parade after marchers failed to heed instructions to disperse. Earlier, the governor's office said it would not allow the march over security concerns and public order.

For the last two years, LGBTI parades have been banned. This year it overlapped with the Muslim holy festival of Eid al-Fitr.
