Most of the victims were displaced people, army says

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - At least 21 people were killed on Monday in an armed attack attributed to Uganda’s Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country’s military said.

The attack was carried out in the Mangusu village in the Ituri province.

Most of the victims were displaced people who settled in Mangusu after fleeing attacks by the rebel group in their communities about a year ago, according to the army.

“The ADF rebels are on a rampage after being flushed out in several villages in the Chiefdom of Walese Vonkutu,” Jules Ngongo, an army spokesman, told journalists.

Ituri and North Kivu have been placed under a state of siege since last May and are being governed by military officers in an effort to stem insecurity.
