ANKARA (AA) – The 24th Deaflympics will get underway in Brazil’s southern city of Caxias do Sul on Sunday.

The games, which started in 1924 and are held every four years, will run until May 15.

This edition was supposed to be held in December 2021 but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last Deaflympics were held in Turkiye’s Black Sea port of Samsun in 2017, where 3,148 athletes from 97 countries competed in 18 sports.

Turkiye finished fourth in the overall standings with 17 gold, seven silver and 22 bronze medals.

Turkiye has 130 athletes at this year’s Deaflympics, who will take part in various sports including football, basketball (women), volleyball (women/men), handball (women/men), badminton, wrestling, karate, taekwondo, judo, tennis and athletics.
