3 people killed in US university shooting as suspect still at large

Police search for gunman suspected to be student, warn people to ‘shelter in place’

ISTANBUL (AA) – At least three people were killed and two others wounded in a US university shooting, as police search for the gunman who is suspected to be a student, said an official on Monday.

“I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care,” Jim Ryan, the president of the University of Virginia, said on Twitter.

Ryan said the shooting took place at 10 p.m. local time (1900GMT) on Sunday. “One of our students, Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr., is suspected to have committed the shooting,” he added.

The suspect, who is still at large, is “considered armed and dangerous,” the university head warned.

“Multiple law enforcement agencies are coordinating to find and apprehend him,” he added.

The university’s police department on Twitter released a photograph of the suspect, saying the gunman is searched for a “shooting incident that occurred on the grounds of the University of Virginia.”

The department later said that the suspect was “armed and dangerous,” and warned people to “shelter in place.”
