EDIRNE, Turkey (AA) – Four people, arrested earlier for their suspected ties to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization, the group behind the 2016 defeated coup, were remanded into custody on Thursday, according to judicial sources.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday while they were trying to flee to Greece via Turkey’s northwestern border province of Edirne.

The local penal court of peace ordered the suspects to be remanded.

The FETO and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.
