ISTANBUL (AA) - At least five police officers were shot Wednesday while attempting to serve a warrant in North Codorus Township in the US state of Pennsylvania, according to local media.
NBC Philadelphia reported that the shooting occurred shortly after 2 pm local time (1800GMT).
Sources told NBC10 reporters Matt DeLucia and Johnny Archer that three officers with the Northern York Regional Police Department are in “grave condition,” a fourth officer is in critical condition, and a York County sheriff’s deputy was also wounded.
Authorities believe the suspect in the shooting died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A temporary shelter-in-place order was lifted later in the day.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi said on the US social media company X’s platform that “the FBI and ATFHQ are on the scene supporting local law enforcement,” adding: “Violence against law enforcement is a scourge on our society and never acceptable. Pray for the officers involved.”
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced that he was heading to the scene as an investigation continues.
