Prime Minister Narendra Modi saddened by loss of lives in Goa state

NEW DELHI (AA) - At least six people were killed and several injured in a stampede during a Hindu religious festival in western Goa state, officials said Saturday.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who confirmed the deaths, said the stampede took place during the Lairai Zatra festival early Saturday where 50 people were also injured. Thousands attend the annual festival.

Sawant, who spoke to Prime Minister Modi after the accident, said the situation is being monitored to ensure every necessary measure is taken.

Goa’s health minister said the injured were being provided treatment at hospitals.

Modi said he was saddened by the loss of lives.

“Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected,” Modi wrote on X.
