WASHINGTON, DC (AA) - Six US lawmakers on Thursday emphasized their unwavering commitment to uphold the Constitution and condemned President Donald Trump’s calls for violence against members of Congress.
A statement by Sens. Elissa Slotkin and Mark Kelly, Reps. Jason Crow, Chrissy Houlahan, Maggie Goodlander and Chris Deluzio, came after Trump demanded that they be arrested and tried, in a series of posts on Truth Social, after they released a video urging US service members and intelligence personnel to disobey orders that would violate the law.
"Hang them George Washington would !!" Trump wrote.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who love this country and swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation," said the lawmakers.
The statement called out Trump for allegedly labeling adherence to the law as “punishable by death,” stressing that servicemembers should feel supported as they carry out their duties under the Constitution.
"It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty," the lawmakers said, adding that the matter goes beyond any individual or political affiliation.
"This isn’t about politics. This is about who we are as Americans. Every American must unite and condemn the President’s calls for our murder and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity.
“In these moments, fear is contagious, but so is courage. We will continue to lead and will not be intimidated. Don't Give Up the Ship!" they added.
