ISTANBUL (AA) – At least seven passengers died after a ferry caught fire in the Philippines on Monday, the country's coast guard said.
The Vessel Mercraft 2 carrying 126 passengers was bound for Real municipality in Quezon province from northeastern Polillo island when it caught fire, according to the Philippines Coast Guard (PCG).
The fatalities included five women and two men, local daily Inquirer reported citing officials.
PCG Commodore Armand Balilo said 24 passengers were also injured in the fire which spread from the engine room.
The vessel was managed by eight crew members.
