ISTANBUL (AA) - Seven people remain missing in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, after heavy rains triggered floods and a landslide.
A rain-triggered landslide struck a village in Guangzhou's Baiyun district early Wednesday, trapping 14 people beneath debris, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
By noon, seven of the trapped people had been pulled to safety by rescue teams.
As of 5.00 pm (0900GMT), a total of 996 residents had been evacuated.
Authorities dispatched 607 rescue personnel and 733 pieces of equipment.
Separately, Guangdong province declared a Level IV emergency response, the lowest tier, due to continued heavy rain and flooding.
The province has been experiencing heavy rain since the start of the week, which is expected to subside on Thursday and Friday.
